Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB)

The CRB provides $500 per week for a maximum of 26 weeks. Applications are made through the CRA and open on October 12, 2020.

Eligibility for the CRB

Individuals are eligible for the CRB if they:

  • are not eligible for EI;

  • are not receiving income from the CRCB or CRSB during the particular 2-week period;

  • currently reside in Canada;

  • have not quit their job voluntarily;

  • are at least 15 years old and have a valid SIN;

  • had employment and/or self-employment income of at least $5,000 in 2019 or 2020;

  • have stopped working due to the COVID-19 pandemic, or have seen their income drop by at least 50% for the 2-week period for which they are applying; and

  • are available and looking for work.

CRB Details

  • the CRB program will be in place for one year from September 27, 2020 to September 25, 2021.

  • applications are made through the CRA for two-week periods.

  • applications must be made within 60 days after the end of the particular 2-week period.

  • the CRB will provide individuals $500 weekly, for a maximum of 26 weeks.

  • income tax of 10% will be withheld from CRB payments.

  • an individual who has an income exceeding $38,000 for 2020 or 2021 will be required to repay an amount equal to 50 cents per dollar of income earned in that year above $38,000 up to the total amount of the CRB received in the given year.
